DHEA is a hormone mainly produced in the adrenal gland and is the most abundant steroid hormone in the body. DHEA is called the “Mother Hormone” because of its ability to help balance the entire endocrine system. DHEA helps to regulate the production of testosterone, estrogen, progesterone, and corticosterones in the body. Due to the fact that DHEA enhances the effectiveness of overall hormone functioning, replacement testing is a must. Boosting DHEA levels, especially for men, may naturally raise testosterone levels. DHEA may decrease by up to 50% by the age of 40. By the time a person is 65 it is believed that the body only produces 10-20% of youthful levels. Some studies have shown that higher levels of natural DHEA were associated with higher levels of fitness, younger looking, younger feeling, and leaner individuals than those with lower DHEA levels.
Falling levels of DHEA are closely associated with a number of age related diseases and disabilities. Replacement has shown to have a number of benefits with regard to anti-aging, weight loss and management, immune functioning, thyroid balance, memory improvement, mood enhancement, increased muscle mass, and overall energy levels. As with other hormones, supplementation of deficiencies can be invaluable.
