Dr. Justin Misko, MD and Todd Calfee ventured down south to Miami, FL for a stem cell conference put on by the Boston BioLife just a few weeks ago. The course has been noted to be, “well-balanced with science & clinical sessions from very knowledgeable faculty.” I sat down with Todd after returning back to Nebraska to discuss his experience at the conference. He seemed equal parts reassured as he did inspired as to how our practice at JMISKO handles adult-derived stem cell therapy. During their 3-day getaway, they experienced an inspiring glimpse of 21st century medicine and the future of regenerative medicine.
Where was the conference? Miami, FL
Who put on the conference? Boston BioLife (bostonbiolife.com)
What dates were you there? Feb. 9-11
Q: Tell us a little about the conference.
A: The conference was attended by predominately physicians and leading providers of stem cell products. We attended three days of intense, but exciting, stem cell & stem cell related functions.

Q: What was the most valuable thing you learned during the conference?
A: The most valuable thing that I learned during the conference was that there are many different ways to treat patients with stem cells. Between the speakers and various attendees that went to the conference, we were able to shake hands and meet many of the leading physicians emerging in this field of medicine. We were able to talk to one attendee in particular that was a candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize. He was attending the conference to learn more about stem cells. With rest assured, I was excited to meet many people who reinforced that stem cell therapy is the future of medicine.
Q: Who was the most interesting speaker or person you met while being there?
A: It is hard to point out any individual in particular because each one was very valuable in their own way. The conference consisted of the very best physicians in the nation in one room and I found it interesting that, although many of them are very successful in their practice, they had many different approaches to stem cell therapy. This showed us that there are many different ways to use stem cells to get the same result. One notable speaker I particularly enjoyed was Dr. Kevin Pauza, MD, owner of the Texas Spine and Joint Hospital in Tyler, TX.

Q: Why did you choose to go to this conference?
A: The reputation of the show was unprecedented. We (Dr. Misko and I) knew that the speakers could answer some lingering questions we both had. I

Q: Would you go back? Why or why not?
A: Yes, I would (and plan to) go back. Boston BioLife puts on about four conferences a year with each one being slightly different than the other. We both plan on attending another conference in the near future.

Q: What is ONE key piece of information you were able to bring back to Nebraska with you?
A: The quality of someone’s life isn’t just about big pharmaceutical, it’s not just about stem cells. It’s about really getting to know each and every one of your patients and coming up with an individualized plan to make their quality of life better. What works for one person may not work for the next.

Q: Was there anything that surprised you during the conference? Share your thoughts about it.
A: When you come from a background like mine in advertising and marketing, nobody wants to ever share their “secrets” on the path to success. Stem cell doctors are very forthcoming with their findings. They are excited to share their research/findings with other doctors. It’s certainly a breath of fresh air to see so many passionate individuals that share a common purpose, all in the same room at once.
Q: Tell us why JMISKO’s stem cell therapy treatment is different from other facilities offering it?
A: There are several things that set JMISKO apart from the other facilities that are offering alike services. First, and most importantly, at JMISKO we look at the overall well-being of the patient, taking into consideration, their age, weight, overall health, etc. We then devise a individualized plan that we think will give the patient the best possible outcome. Dr. Misko is very transparent and wants to help all his patients alike. He will tell you if your illness or condition is not best-suited for stem cell therapy and help devise an alternative plan. We also strongly believe in following up with our patients and monitoring how they are feeling post-op.
Q: Where do you see the future of stem cell pain therapy?
A: Stem cells ARE the future of regenerative medicine. But, in all reality, there’s constantly so much to learn and I don’t think we will ever know as much as we would like.
